Optimism Welcomes Layer 3 (L3) Chain Builders on Superchain

In the long run, the aim is to ensure a smooth transition from L2 to L3, in addition to reducing onboarding fees for new users.

Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution Optimism took to X to inform its community that Layer 3 (L3) chains are now welcomed on the Superchain. To leverage the Superchain for L3s, developers are required to build on the Optimism OP Stack and share sequencer revenue with the Optimism Collective, the protocol’s governing body.

These L3 chains are networks that find support on any of Optimism’s Layer 2 chains including OP Mannet, Base, and Mode. Usually, the design of an L3 chain is specific to an application. They can be customized to the taste and desire of the builder.

Compared to Layer 2 and Layer 1, L3 chains are believed to have a higher transaction volume capacity.

Optimism Unveils Support Measures for L3 Chain Developers

Once an L3 builder gets on board the Superchain, access is granted to perks like airdrops, retroactive funding as well as growth campaigns.

According to the L2 scaling solution, L3 developers also stand to enjoy a broader network of like-minds. Optimism has demonstrated commitment to ensuring a seamless onboarding process for the L3 chains by introducing two features.

First is OP Stack custom gas tokens. These give chains the flexibility to design their transaction fee. Builders could use their existing L2 token for a gas fee. Then there is Plasma Mode, a solution that makes it possible for chains to choose their Data Availability (DA) layer.

In the long run, the aim is to ensure a smooth transition from L2 to L3, in addition to reducing onboarding fees for new users.

“Low overhead costs give L3 teams an even more accessible option for deploying on the OP Stack,” Optimism added.

These two features are expected to promote a collaborative environment within the Optimism ecosystem.

Cross-Ecosystem Backing for L3 Development

It is worthy of note that layer chains on the Superchain will not maintain the standard of the OP Stack configurations. Rather, there would be a deviation that would impact the rollout of interoperability features.

The Optimism innovators seem unperturbed by this variation as it continues to push for the integration of L3 chains on the Superchain.

Crypto projects that are interested in building their L3 chains within the Superchain are likely to gain support from some infrastructure teams. Syndicate, Caldera, Gelato Network, Chaindrop, Zeeve, and Conduit are all set to provide support to projects that fall in this category.

Meanwhile, there are other protocols that are interested in providing infrastructure for L3 chains. A few weeks ago, Offchain Labs, the team behind the Arbitrum L2 project, debuted some development tools that would enhance the development of L3 chains. Orbit, as Offchain Labs called it, is a dedicated ‘tooling’ that allows developers to create their chain. Transactions from these chains eventually settles on Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova.

Similarly, zkSync utilizes Hyperchains, which provide high scalability, speed, and privacy to applications built atop it to enhance L3 functionalities.
